The Mustang is often considered one of the most capable fighters of World War II. It also served in the Korean War, and this kit builds one of those F-51D aircraft. The P-51D was renamed the F-51D when the US Air Force was formed. The Mustang seemed headed for retirement as jets took center stage, but the outbreak of fighting on the Korean peninsula changed that. Early in the war, UN forces were under heavy pressure, and USAF P-80s often could not land at airstrips that were not proper runways. The F-51D filled the ground attack role well as UN forces pushed back.
