The Beetle's design dates back to the 1930s, when Dr. Ferdinand Porsche provided the framework for the People's Car. More than 20 million were built, more than any other vehicle. It sits on a sturdy platform chassis and has a reliable air-cooled, flat-four engine and four-wheel independent suspension for crisp handling and comfort. World War II hampered sales, but production recovered after the war under Heinrich Nordhoff. Over the decades the car gained displacement and better visibility, which helped set standards for the compact car market. The 1966 model is regarded as the classic Beetle. It keeps most of the original design traits and is a collector's item.
