Kawasaki's sport bikes have inspired fans for generations. As demand grew for super sport machines capable of more than 300km/h, several manufacturers brought out powerful contenders. Kawasaki answered at the 1999 Paris Motorcycle Show with the all-new Ninja ZX-12R. Its styling was said to take cues from a fighter plane, and its slippery aerodynamics came from work with the Aerospace Division of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. The ZX-12R spent more time in the wind tunnel than any Kawasaki motorcycle before it. Small winglets on the fairing sides separate airflow around the bike, and small wind deflectors on the lower forks steer turbulent air away from the engine. A long lip on the fairing edge smooths the flow further. A large scoop ahead of the front fairing uses higher air pressure to improve intake efficiency. The monocoque frame backbone forms an airbox that lets air pass through the bike for cooling.
