The Grumman F6F Hellcat succeeded the Wildcat and made its mark in 1942, when it decisively beat the Japanese carrier based fighters it faced in the Pacific during World War II. Its design came from specifications set by a large group of fighter pilots polled by Grumman Aircraft Company officials. The first flight took place on July 26 of that year. Beyond its role as a carrier fighter, the Hellcat also flew with the U.S. Marine Corps as a capable fighter-bomber.
