Development of a new heavy tank began in February 1943, when Germany needed to counter the growing threat of Russian tanks. Officially called the Panzerkampfwagen VI-B Tiger II and better known as the King Tiger, it had thick armor and a powerful main gun. Henschel and Porsche each produced prototypes with different turret designs, and Henschel's was chosen after trials. The King Tiger carried the Type 43 L/71 88mm gun, which could penetrate 170mm of armor at 1,000 meters. It had two 7.92mm machine guns, one in the front hull and one in the turret. Turret front armor measured 185mm and the side panels 88mm. A Maybach HL230 P30 liquid-cooled V-12 engine produced 700 horsepower. Mass production at Henschel began in August 1944, after the last Tiger I tanks were delivered.
