During Operation Citadel in 1943, the T-34/76 1943 model was still the mainstay of the Soviet tank force, and its battles with newer German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger are well documented. Near Prokhorovka, T-34s of the 181st Guard Tank Brigade, part of the Fifth Guards Tank Army, fought Tiger tanks of the elite SS Panzer divisions Adolf Hitler and Das Reich. It was the largest tank-versus-tank engagement of the Second World War. If the 1942 T-34 earned the name Stalingrad, the 1943 model earned the name Kursk.
